CNN’s David Gergen: Bush Sr. Represented Best of ‘What Leadership Used to Look Like in This Country’

By News Here - 00:01

CNN commentator David Gergen, who worked in the Reagan White House when George H.W. Bush was vice president, said this afternoon that the former president is a shining example of what leadership used to be in America.

“I’m just so pleased at the way he’s being celebrated,” he told Jake Tapper. “I’m just heartened by it, because not only does it fit the man––and I think he merits it––but I think this is also 24 hours of nostalgia about what leadership used to look like in this country. And I think he represented the best of that leadership tradition.”

He noted how Bush was the last WWII president and emphasized how much the 41st president brought character and decency to the office.

Gergen only alluded to the “lack of civility today” before saying Bush was a great example of a civil leader.

“He did not abuse power,” Gergen said. “He used power with restraint. He understood that’s one of the traditions of our American presidency.”
